The Sperm Whale(Physeter macrocephalus) is the largest toothed whale and has the biggest brain that weighs to be about 20 pounds. The Sperm Whales get their name from the oily fat in their head that is called spermaceti. Sperm whales can live to be 70 years old. Sperm whales are one of the deepest divers in the ocean. They dive down to about 3,000 feet to find their food. Sperm whales eat squids and small fishes. Appearance
The bull Sperm Whales can grow up to 67 feet long but averages about 57 feet long. The cow sperm whales average about 36 feet, much smaller then the male. A newborn comes out to be about 13 feet long.
Sperm Whales are usually Grey but there have been reports of white Sperm Whales. You can usually identify a Sperm Whale by it's flat box-head. The Sperm Whales tail fin is in a thick triangular shape. Sperm Whales have scars on their body because when they catch a squid for feeding, the squids usually suck on them. From what I've researched, scientists don't understand why Sperm Whales have teeth because they don't use them for eating. The only reason they seem to use their teeth is when they're fighting other bulls. Reproduction
Sperm whales typically have a low birth rate and are part of a reproduction group called K-selected, which is a trade off between quantity or quality. The baby whale stays in the fetus for about 13 months. A cow whale usually reach sexual maturity at about 7 years of age. After this point, they swim up to the higher point of the ocean to mate.
